Hearing Examiner approves 114 units in Central Area with Afrofuturist theme

Sep 14 2023, DJC

“Local apartment developer Great Expectations has cleared some key hurdles for its planned Acer House, which will eventually rise at 2210 E. Cherry St., on the corner of 23rd Avenue in the Central Area. Architect Schemata Workshop secured design approval last summer for the six-story, 114-unit proposal, which has an Afrofuturist theme. That plan depends, however, on a contract rezone for the site’s current 40-foot zoning.

But earlier this month, the city Hearing Examiner approved the rezone to an even 65 feet. Next, Seattle City Council will vote on the matter; it generally follows the Hearing Examiner’s recommendations.”

“The seven-story development is designed by Runberg Architecture Group and is being built by Walsh Construction Co. It will have 18 studios for low-wage workers, 66 small efficiency dwelling units for the formerly homeless, one manager’s unit, and a three-bedroom unit with a separate entrance on the ground level that will be occupied by the church’s minister. There will also be a building manager’s office and parking for nine vehicles.”

New names attached to Baker Linen addition

Sep 13 2023, DJC

“The handsome corner building, at 11th Avenue, is one of the survivors of the old Auto Row that β€” before the freeway β€” once extended downhill and west to downtown. The building opened circa 1916 as the new home for Seattle Automobile Co., which operated there for another decade or so. Among following tenants, Baker Linen closed in 1983.

The team now also includes Belotti + McHugh, general contractor; Swenson Say Faget, structural engineer; Sider + Byers Associates, mechanical and plumbing; Case Engineering, electrical; LPD Engineering, civil; and 4EA Building Science, envelope.”

Meet Milgard Hall: UW Tacoma’s first mass timber building

Sep 05 2023, DJC

“Milgard Hall is strategically designed to encourage interaction between the STEM fields and business programs supported in the facility. It houses a mix of classrooms and flexible learning spaces, including a 120-person teaching innovation classroom, two 80-person general classrooms, and smaller group learning spaces/breakout rooms, as well as cutting-edge labs and makers spaces. Those include a machine shop, an outdoor science court, a 40-person computer lab, a dedicated maker space and fabrication shop, a concrete lab, combustion lab, geotechnical/soils mechanics lab, and a biomechanics and robotics lab. The hall also hosts a mix of collaborative spaces and open and closed offices for faculty and staff. Flexible collaborative and classroom spaces can be rented by community organizations and businesses for local events.”

Chinn nearing the finish line for 139 Roosevelt units

Sep 05 2023, DJC

“The crane is gone, and the Corner 63 apartment project looks on track to open late this year. Chinn Construction began work at 6300 Ninth Ave. N.E. in the summer of 2021.

Planning for the seven-story, now 139-unit project began six years ago under White/Peterman Properties β€” which then sold the project in 2021 to High Street Residential, the multifamily arm of Trammell Crow Co. MetLife is its financial partner on the project.”
