UW Health Sciences Education Building

  • Seattle, Washington

Completed: 2022

The University of Washington Health Sciences Education Building adds a technologically sophisticated space for the schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and social work. The structure utilizes steel and mass timber components to create an enclosure that is both durable and environmentally conscious.

This new academic building is located on the south side of NE Pacific Street at the University of Washington and includes 98,000 SF of active learning spaces amongst other uses. The design intent was to create a flexible space that can adapt to take on the needs of the University and its students now and in the future, furthering the life of this building. Considerations were taken to create a healthcare environment that felt holistic and soothing with a visually striking exterior façade surrounded by lush landscaping. Large windows and a recessed entrance invite you to retreat inside where you are greeted by warm mass timber paneling on the interior.

For this project, 4EA was a part of the design-build team from conception through completion. We provided specialty enclosure and façade consulting services throughout design and construction, including engineering the unique open joint perforated façade system, consulting on the prefabricated panelized wall systems, and assisting with moisture management strategies for the CLT decks. Additionally, we provided field-related services, reviewed shop drawings, and performed panel plant reviews as well as field reviews.
