Building Science Consultant – Vancouver

4EA Building Science is looking for a Building Science Consultant to join its recently opened Vancouver office!

Your role at 4EA will be to support senior staff in design, fieldwork, and energy consulting. Our projects vary in size and complexity, from small and simple to large and complex. This role includes design reviews, site work, report writing and liaising with clients along with directly supporting the Vancouver Office Director and Project Managers.

Your Duties:

  • Performing site testing including window and air barrier tests.
  • Performing field reviews – travel to site, review construction process, and produce detailed reports with observations and action related items.
  • Drafting – architectural plans, elevations and details.
  • Developing enclosure details by utilizing and contributing to 4EA’s detail library.
  • Reviewing architectural design drawings and specifications
  • Contract administration including responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings and product submittals.
  • Communicating with the design and construction teams.
  • Energy modelling for Step Code, NECB, ASHRAE 90.1, State or Municipal Energy codes.
  • Thermal bridging calculations.
  • Building assessments and reporting.
  • Life cycle assessment (LCA) reports for new construction projects.

A working knowledge of building science design fundamentals is needed, though aspects will be taught as part of job training. 4EA promotes their staff to pursue relevant professional development and industry involvement.

Education & Experience:

  • One or more years of work experience in building science, building design, or related fields such as architecture, project management, sustainability, and MEP.
  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in Architecture, Civil or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Preference to be able to register with professional associations like EGBC, AIBC, ASTTBC.

In addition to your education and work experience, the ideal candidate will also possess the following skills and attributes.

You Have:

  • A strong command of the English language with excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Strong foundation of building enclosure products and systems.
  • Knowledge of building material properties and construction processes.
  • Experience with field reviews and collaborating with both design and construction teams.
  • Driver’s License and consistent access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Working knowledge in AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with energy modelling software (e.g. design builder, energy plus, eQuest, IES VE, etc.)
  • Experience with thermal simulation software (e.g. Therm, Flixo) or thermal bridging calculations.
  • Experience with life cycle assessment tools (e.g. Athena, one-clik LCA, etc.)
